Hemp Seeds
Hemp Seeds
No no no this is not a post about me saying we should all be smoking marijuana. Hemp comes from the same plant as marijuana but does not contain any of the psychodelic THC or CBD properties. I love this as a vegetarian protein powder for shakes and whole hemp hearts on top of yogurt. Hemp seeds, derived from the Cannabis sativa plant, are a nutritious and versatile food source that offer several health benefits. Here are some of the key health benefits associated with hemp seeds:Â
Rich in Nutrients: Hemp seeds are a great source of essential nutrients, including protein, fiber, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals. They contain high-quality protein with all nine essential amino acids, making them a complete protein source.
Healthy Fats: Hemp seeds are rich in polyunsaturated fats, particularly omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, in an ideal ratio for human health. These fatty acids play a crucial role in heart health, brain function, and reducing inflammation.
Heart Health: The omega-3 fatty acids in hemp seeds may contribute to heart health by reducing the risk of heart disease. Additionally, hemp seeds contain an amino acid called arginine, which is a precursor to nitric oxide. Nitric oxide helps relax blood vessels, promoting better blood flow and potentially reducing blood pressure.
Digestive Health: Hemp seeds are an excellent source of both soluble and insoluble fiber, which can support digestive health. Fiber promotes regular bowel movements, helps prevent constipation, and supports a healthy gut microbiome.
Anti-Inflammatory Properties: The gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) found in hemp seeds has anti-inflammatory effects, which may benefit conditions such as arthritis. Reduced inflammation is associated with improved joint health and decreased pain.
Skin Health: The combination of essential fatty acids, including omega-3s and omega-6s, in hemp seeds can contribute to healthy skin. These fats help maintain skin elasticity, hydration, and may alleviate symptoms of skin conditions like eczema.
Rich in Antioxidants: Hemp seeds contain various antioxidants, such as vitamin E and phenolic compounds. Antioxidants help protect the body from oxidative stress, which can contribute to chronic diseases and aging.
Weight Management: The combination of protein, fiber, and healthy fats in hemp seeds can contribute to a feeling of fullness, potentially aiding in weight management by reducing overall calorie intake.
Balanced Blood Sugar Levels: The fiber and protein content in hemp seeds may help stabilize blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of insulin resistance and Type 2 diabetes.
